Those who've heard Chairman Kato's debut EP 'Wildfire' (Pictures Music) could be forgiven for assuming he likes his music slow and involving. But anyone who has seen him DJ will attest to the fact that when the lights are down and he is on the decks, Kato specialises in frenzied dancefloor wreckage.

Kato started collecting 70's funk and hip hop whilst still a barefaced schoolboy. A move to Leeds and several residencies later his collection was soon swelled by house and techno, giving him the opportunity to develop his method of unabashed eclecticism. Depending on where you see him you might catch him warming souls with 70s funk, or if he's in a nasty mood he'll probably knock heads with a bruising techno set. Give him enough time and he might do all of the above.

He debuted his live set this year, supporting alumni such as Actress and Maurice Fulton, as well as putting in two live performances on London's The Boiler Room. Rather than take the easy route and throw together a glorified Ableton DJ set, he took the time to develop a show that makes use of genuine improvisation and flexibility. The result is a live experience that runs the gamut of tempos and emotions.

His next release is to be the Science  and Romance EP, forthcoming on Awkward Movements and receiving early support from Actress, Illum Sphere and Rob Luis. As befits an EP heavily influenced by Detroit, it features a remix from Mahogoni Music/Slum Village acolyte Andres, who has taken 'Low Rises' and squeezed it through his lopsided mangle. Punch Drunk analogue enthusiast Ekoplekz has also lent his touch to his epic rework of 'Usual Drama'.

He has also managed to find time to launch two exhibitions- the immersive alien crime scene that was 'Underbelly' and the group art show in July where he unveiled his 'Purgatory' piece.

The next few months will see the release of this EP, followed by the likely emergence of his recent, more dancefloor orientated material.
